Five Card Stud Rules

One of the original types of poker games, the game of Five playing card Stud, is becoming essentially vanished in the poker playing world (as well as at web based poker playing sites) with Seven card Stud becoming a new popular alternative for most gamers.

The poker game of Five card Stud is looked at by numerous gamers as too simple a poker game to take seriously.  The single down playing card means there is not much in the way of surprises for the other players, this makes for few bluffing opportunities, and good quality sets of cards are easily spotted by others playing and they will promptly lay down their hand.

Although Five card Stud isn’t that popular any more, the poker game does retain a little charm and there are a few sites that offer it as a poker game choice.

A game of Five card Stud has been played using the following rules:

  • Every one of the participants ante up prior to the cards being dealt (the amount of the ante will be different depending on the table limits).
  • All participants are given two cards, one card face down (the ‘hole’ playing card) and one card face up.
  • A round of wagering takes place, with the participant displaying the maximum valued playing card going first.
  • All players receive another playing card, face up.
  • Additional betting occurs.
  • A new playing card is given (face up) to all players.
  • Another round of betting takes place, however in this round the smallest bet is doubled.
  • All participants are given their last playing card, face up.
  • The final bets are made.

With all of the wagering done the remaining competitors show their cards starting with the person who was the final player to raise the pot.  The player showing the best poker hand claims the pot.
